The UMP3 (UltraMicroPump3) is a versatile microinjection syringe pump paired with microsyringes to deliver microliter-level volumes. The UMP3 is optimal for applications requiring precise, targeted injections of  extremely low-volume samples. With its touchscreen controller, our UMP3 can deliver or withdraw as little as 25nL (using 10µL syringe with 60 mm stroke length).

Patent Pending Technology

The MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller for the UMP3 and NANOLITER2020 features Patent Pending technology which includes:

  • Total system calibration – Calibrate the syringe and the controller together as a system. This feature eliminates variability of the syringe and delivers (or withdraws) the configured volume.
  • Smart smoothness – The controller can be set to automatically adjust microstepping according to the injection rate to deliver (or withdraw) smoothly.
  • User defined travel limits – Set the limits for your NanoSyringe on your MICRO2T. This prevents your UMP3 from exceeding its drive range.

Additional Features

The MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller has a graphical indication of the rate and volume remaining in your NanoSyringe. It offers end-stop detection that is dependent on the syringe volume. You can control two pumps independently the MICRO2T's dual capability. The controller also has automatic pump detection and a Pause/Resume feature for incremental dosing during infusion, or sample collection upon withdraw. The MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller is fully compatible with all previous models of the UMP3.

Flexibility in Mounting

For positioning, the UMP3 microinjection syringe pump may be attached to any of several WPI micropositioners such as the M3301 (manual), DC3001 (motorized) and most stereotaxic manipulators.

Computer Control— A USB port on the rear of the MICRO2T controller can be used for connecting to a computer for scripted protocols.

NOTE: UMP3 accepts glass syringes with barrel diameters from 5.5 to 9 mm. You MUST set end-stop positions on your MICRO2T prior to using your UMP3.

FAQs

What is the minimum injection volume of the UMP3?

The UMP3 can deliver injections as small as 25 nL when used with a 10 µL NanoFil™ syringe.

What is the difference between UMP3T-1 and UMP3T-2?

UMP3T-1 includes one pump with a SMARTouch controller, while UMP3T-2 includes two pumps controlled by the same dual-channel controller.

What applications is the UMP3T typically used for?

Typical applications include microinjection into tissue, drug delivery, microfluidics, and intraocular or intravitreal injections.

Why choose a micro syringe pump over a pressure microinjector?

Unlike pressure-based systems, the UMP3 syringe pump provides highly controlled, repeatable volume delivery, making it ideal for applications requiring precise dosing at the nanoliter scale.

What is a microinjection syringe pump used for?

A microinjection syringe pump is used to precisely deliver or withdraw very small volumes of fluid, often in the nanoliter to microliter range, into tissues, cells, or microfluidic systems. Common applications include neuroscience injections, drug delivery, and targeted delivery of dyes or viral vectors.

Can the UMP3 be used for stereotaxic injections?

Yes, the UMP3 is designed to mount directly onto stereotaxic frames or micromanipulators, making it ideal for precise injections into specific regions of the brain or other tissues.

Is the UMP3 suitable for intravitreal or intraocular injections?

Yes, when paired with WPI’s NanoFil™ syringe and appropriate kits (such as the RPE or IO kits), the UMP3 enables controlled, low-volume injections for ocular applications.

What syringe sizes can be used with the UMP3?

The UMP3 supports a wide range of glass microliter syringes, typically from 0.5 µL to 1000 µL, including NanoFil™, Hamilton, SGE, and ILS syringes.

Does the UMP3 support automated workflows?

Yes, when paired with the MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller, users can automate injection protocols, save settings, and control multiple pumps simultaneously.

How does a microinjection syringe pump work?

A microinjection syringe pump uses a motor-driven mechanism to precisely move the plunger of a syringe, allowing controlled delivery or withdrawal of fluid. The rate and volume are programmed through a controller, enabling highly repeatable and accurate dosing.

What accessories are recommended for the UMP3 system?

For optimal performance, WPI recommends pairing the UMP3 with NanoFil™ gas-tight syringes and needles, which minimize dead volume and improve targeting accuracy. Additional accessories include a micromanipulator, foot switches, and application-specific kits.
