Electrocautery, also known as electrocauterization or simply cautery, uses high-frequency electric current to cut, coagulate, or remove tissue. Electrocautery tips, also referred to as electrodes, come in various shapes and designs. WPI's offers five of these electrodes individually or a variety package with seven electrocautery electrodes. The kit includes a ball electrode, three sizes of wire electrodes, two circular electrodes and one diamond electrode. These electrodes are designed for use with WPI's 501274 Electrosurgery Unit

First, diamond electrodes have a tip shaped like a diamond, which provides a sharp edge, making these electrodes effective for precise cutting. The shape allows for efficient tissue dissection, and they are used in ophthalmic surgery or plastic surgery.
Next, circle electrodes feature a rounded, circular tip. They are versatile and can be used for coagulation or cutting, depending on the specific design and surgeon's preference. The circular shape allows for a more uniform distribution of electrical energy, and they are suitable for various surgical procedures where a rounded or circular incision or coagulation is desired, such as in general surgery or dermatological procedures.
Then, needle electrodes have a thin, fine wire-like tip. They are designed for delicate and precise cutting or coagulation. Due to their slender nature, they are often used in microsurgery. Wire needle electrodes are often used in neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery, and other procedures where intricate and fine-tuned control is essential. A fourth style of wire electrodes is loop electrodes, which have a long loop-shaped tip. They are designed for excising or removing tissue in a circular manner.
Loop electrodes are commonly used in gynecological procedures, where a circular section of tissue needs to be removed. Finally, a ball electrode (only available in the kit) features a round or spherical tip. They are frequently used for general tissue coagulation. They are versatile and can be used in a variety of surgical procedures.
