The ALM (Andrews-Lucia-McPherson) self-retaining retractor is a surgical instrument designed to hold the eyelids open during ophthalmic surgery, providing surgeons with a clear view of the eye. The two blades have a curved end that fits into the fornices of the eye. The adjustable blades are held in place by a spring-loaded mechanism. The ALM retractor was designed in the 1960s by three ophthalmologist. It is crafter of surgical grade stainless steel or premium German steel, and they may be autoclaved or sterilized using a chemical sterilant.
