Polarizers, also known as polarizing filters, are used in polarized light microscopes to select plane-polarized light from natural or unpolarized light. They are placed between the light source and the sample to convert the light into a single direction of vibration. When the polarized light hits a doubly refracting specimen, it generates two wave components, called ordinary and extraordinary light rays, that are at right angles to each other. These waves pass through the specimen in different phases, which can improve imaging of certain materials, such as collagen.
What Does an Analyzer Slider Do?
An analyzer slider rotates to adjust the polarization of light that passes through an object, and reaches the eyepiece, resulting in maximum image contrast. The analyzer is a second filter that blocks out all but one polarization of light.
