This SUMILON Companion Plate can be used with different types of cell inserts of various shapes available from different manufacturers. The 24-Well Companion Plate provides a safe and novel method for media exchange as it allows sufficient space for the pipette tip insertion without removing the cell culture insert. This minimizes the vibration or disruption of the cells. As the insert does not have to be removed, this method is compatible with automation for culture and cell-based assays.

This method has been designed using the capillary force of the grooves around the bottom inside of the well ensuring complete media replacement.

Details

Background & Plate Description

Permeable membrane cell culture inserts are normally used to grow cells to evaluate cellular functions, such as barrier formation, permeability, cell migration, and angiogenesis. During the maintenance of these cultures on cell culture insert plates, the media needs to be changed with fresh media and samples may need collected from apical (top of the insert) and basolateral (bottom of the insert) sides of the cell cultures.

The access to the basolateral compartment to replace media or collect samples could be challenging in standard insert plates, since the gap between the well of most standard 24-well plate and the insert is insufficient to use a pipette or aspirator without risking possible damage to the cell layer.

To conduct the media exchange or sample collection, inserts must be lifted one at a time, using tweezers or other tools, which is a labor-intensive process.  The 24-well SUMILON Companion Plate allows easy media exchange and sampling with cell culture inserts, overcoming tedious individual insert lifting and mitigating the risk of damaging samples and facilitating automation and high throughput analysis with cell culture inserts (e.g., automated TEER measurement).

 

Features

  • These SUMILON Companion Plates are compatible with cell culture inserts from different manufacturers (e.g., Corning, Millipore, Grenier, Falcon, and others).
  • The Companion Plates secure cell culture inserts in place with the designed notch at the well aperture, allowing you to tilt the plates and the inserts for manual or automated handling.
  • The wells of these plates are shaped to hold the cell culture inserts firmly, so their positions are not altered during media exchange. The micro-steps on the inner sides of the wells prevent the rise in liquid level that can occur due to capillary action caused by dimension difference in the gap between the inserts and wells. And, a groove on the well wall aids in draining the culture medium.
  • Medium exchange and sampling can be performed from the plate through a port adjoining the main well (“the Port”), without lifting the inserts. The port also provides sufficient space for the electrode of a TEER measurement instrument.
  • The well bottom, including the port area, is cell culture-treated and offers a culture area comparable to conventional 24-well plates (187.5 mm²), enabling co-culture in both the insert and the well bottom of the plate.
  • The space surrounding each well is prepared to accommodate sterilized water, which can reduce the drying out of the culture medium.
  • Package of 12 plates, individually wrapped and sterile.
