Introducing WPI’s EVOM™ Chip system is a platform that enables real-time, multiplexed TEER measurement for up to 12 chips. WPI has integrated our legacy TEER technology into Synivo’s BBB (blood-brain barrier) chip platform, the SynBBB™, for live barrier monitoring. It is the first organ-on-chip platform integrating WPI’s peer-reviewed TEER technology for true, reliable results you can trust. We don’t plan to stop there. The SynBBB™ platform is just one of many devices where we plan to introduce functionalized TEER on-chip.

The EVOM™ Chip platform is an imaging, fluidics, and incubator-agnostic device. The measurement cradle is the size of a 24-/96-well format for easy drop-in to most commercial stage-top incubators and live cell imagers. WPI's UMP3T-1 system can be used for priming/degassing devices, and our Aladdin line for media circulation, but is not required. Fluidic devices to be used for each of these steps are at the customer's discretion.

With the rapidly growing Organ-on-Chip (OOC) market, comes the need for understanding how cells and tissues are growing on these 3D platforms, and their response to a variety of drug exposures.
TEER (trans-epithelial-electrical-resistance), a method for measuring cell barrier integrity and confluency pioneered by WPI, has been found to be a critical measurement for verifying barrier health in real-time in OOC platforms. For the first time, WPI has functionalized its EVOM™ (Epithelial Volt/Ohm Meter) technology on-chip for real-time, multiplexed TEER readout. While many competitors claim to offer TEER for on-chip applications, few understand the data, or whether the readout is truly TEER data to draw physiological relevance upon.
WPI being the leader in TEER technology, with over 4,000 publications and patented IP since the early 1990’s, has paved the way for what true TEER looks like. From the location of each embedded electrode to the materials used for total biocompatibility, our platform considers the exact areas critical for measurement for the most sensitive, high-throughput approach to TEER for OOC.
While this system is functionalized for Synvivo’s SynBBB chip, this is just the start to enabling TEER for a multitude of chip configurations.
* Note: WPI is chip-agnostic, we do not carry any exclusivity to any singular chip manufacturer. We work as a partner to functionalize TEER for your system. If you are not using the SynBBB™ device, find out how WPI can work with you to enable TEER in your system today.
The EVOM™ Chip Interface Unit will hold up to four (4) TEER-embedded SynBBB™ devices. Each device is a 25.0 × 35.0 × 1.00 mm thick glass slide which contains three (3) chips evaluating Blood Brain Barrier (BBB). For example, one device is in Fig. 6, located in positions A1, B1, and C1. The test three chips are in locations A2, B2, C2; A3, B3, C3; and A4, B4, C4 of the EVOM™ Chip Interface Unit. This means you can now have a high-throughput readout of up to twelve devices, all in one platform.
